Reach In/Reach Out: (Taken from the DEEWR website)
This diagram shows how the PaCE Program aims for the parents/caregivers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and community members to reach in to schools to develop partnerships with them in order to improve the educational outcomes of their children.
Kura Yerlo has taken on this role because we as a community organization have realised how important it is to work with parents/caregivers, schools and other networks to help our youth in their education. To guide students and education providers in supporting parents to engage with their children’s education. This will enable parents to communicate with their children’s school or could enhance their skills to help students do school work at home. Either way we will be here to support you as a community.
The role of the PaCE Engagement Officer is to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders families to develop activities and programs that increase parental activity with schools and education providers to enhance and improve children’s education outcomes. The age group that I will be working with over the next year are 0 – 5, helping with the transition from kindy into primary school. Currently I am running a Kindy Reading Program at Kura Yerlo. This is to encourage the parents/ grandparents or other family members to engage in the education of their children. The parents have been coming to read to their child and other class mates maybe one a week depending on time. This has been an excellent way to start the process of parental engagement. The feedback from parents and the children is very positive, the child/ren are so excited to see a mum or dad sitting in front of their class and reading to them and their friends. The child will often come to me and tell me that mummy or daddy have just visited, the smile on their face says it all. This program will be continuing next year as participation has been great.
