Kura Yerlo Inc. - AYAC
ABORIGINAL YOUTH ACTION COMMITTEE
YOUTH MAKING WAVES FOR YOUTH
The aim of AYAC is to:
- Assist young Aboriginal people to develop their own local committee, so that it becomes an integral part in the decision making process and planning of activities within their community.
- Empower and encourage young people to take control and responsibility for their own issues and affairs within their local community.
- Provide an opportunity for young people to come together to share a common bond, develop and run activities.
Kura Yerlo Inc AYAC committee currently has 16 members that represent seven schools within the Western district:
Oceanview College
Lefevre High School
Woodville High School
Mt Carmel College

Lefevre Primary School
Alberton Primary School
The AYAC committee meet on a monthly basis to develop youth initiative to engage young people and volunteer at community level. This type of input from the youth has seen them become proactive in tackling identified issues and needs of local youth. On a personal level, this group of young people have gained self confidence and self esteem and displaying “a can do” attitude.
This year four AYAC committee members attended the Aboriginal Youth Action Committee State Conference June 2010. This year the conference was held at the Woodhouse Conference Centre Piccadilly. The theme was Unsung Heroes. The conference was broken down to the following sessions:

Nunga Nite is still very popular with AYAC and the youth in the Western region. Numbers have been consistent all year. This year we have had special appearances by Animals Anonymous, Joellene Rankin, airbrush Tattoos and Jessica Sunners – Face Painter. We look forward to seeing everyone that has attended next year when these nights will be bigger and better. Thank you to all staff, volunteers and Community Constable – Port Adelaide, Tricia, Jeff, Kerry and Alfie for making this night a success.
This year the AYAC committee working towards small goals. They have organized funding to attend OzBosco in Sydney. OzBosco is a weekend of Fun, Friends, Faith and Festivity, with special Guest speakers, workshops, animated and meaningful Prayer and Liturgy moments, group sessions, and a variety of recreational activities, including trampolines, indoor soccer, basketball, tennis, etc, at Don Bosco Youth Centre in Sydney. The youth attended a harbor cruise on the Saturday evening and a Bush Dance on the Sunday. There were one hundred and sixty other young people from all over Australia aged 15-25. This program is run by the Salesians of Don Bosco, who made us feel welcome and did everything possible to make us confortable. AYAC had to do a lot of fund raising to attend OzBosco and we would like to thank the following people for their donations:

A big thank you to Sister Louise McKeogh for all your support and help in making the trip so memorable:
